Hiram firefighters have practiced Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) training and self rescue for several years. This included sending two of our own, Lt. Canitia and Firefighter O'Connor out of state for one week to a train the trainer RIT class. In February, firefighters conducted a drill commonly referred to as the Nance drill. Named after a fallen Columbus firefighter, this drill simulates a distressed or downed firefighter falling into a basement and requiring rescue. A firefighter is lowered down with ropes by fellow firefighters to the victim, and then as a team they complete the rescue by raising the victim out with the same ropes. As seen here, simple construction scaffolding was set up and used to simulate the environment and train for this type of rescue.
